The classical socialist position on electoral politics is for the working class to run their own candidates in their own party independently of the capitalist parties. In the US, major socialist currents have opted for supporting Democratic candidates Democrats since 1936. Today, the largest socialist organization, Democratic Socialist of America, has largely supported Democratic candidates, though many DSAers call for an independent workers party eventually. Meanwhile, the Green Party has adopted an ecosocialist perspective and is the largest party running independent candidates. What should we do in 2020 with Trump and other far-right Republicans on the ballot?
Howie Hawkins is a retired Teamster from Syracuse, New York who is seeking the Green Party nomination for president. A civil rights, peace, union, and environmental activist since the 1960s, in 2010 he was the first US candidate to campaign for a Green New Deal running for governor of New York.
Rodolfo Cortes Barragan is the 2020 Green Party candidate for congress in California’s 40th district including Huntington Park, East Los Angeles, and Downey. He received 23% of the vote for this seat in the 2018 general election. He is a psychologist with a PhD from Stanford.
Gabe Gabrielsky has been active in the socialist movement since the 1960s. He is active today in the Democratic Socialist of America, Solidarity, and the Green Party, and serves as Treasurer of the Los Angeles local of the Socialist Party USA.
